Autronic SMC is a speed density system and as such uses as it's main input, manifold pressure, air temperature and engine speed (rpm) to determine fuelling and ignition requirements, which makes the Air Flow Meter (referred to from here on as the AFM) obsolete. Removal of the AFM is very straight.

Instead of 8 injector driver's, with more than 5 ohm resistance, the SM3 is aimed at the 4 to 6 cylinder market. Whilst the SM3 still has the 8 injector pins, numbers 7 & 8 can instead be used as input switches. The SM3 only other limitation is that it can also only run one adjustable camshaft, otherwise everything else is just like the more more expensive SM4, including launch control, traction control and the superior fuel control that SM4 has.
